The Manage Themes Screen Needs to Indicate Clear User Actions

What problem does this address?

A new user might not understand the difference between uploading a theme and browsing the theme repository. To make it easier for new users to use WordPress, user actions should be clearer.

What is your proposed solution?

  • The Add New isn't descriptive of the action the user should it. The text on the button should be changed to "Browse WordPress Themes".
  • Manage Themes should be changed to My Themes to indicate to the user these are the themes they have installed on their website.
  • A button should be added that allows the user to upload a theme. It should say "Upload Theme".
  • The button that says "Add New Theme" should be changed to "Browse WordPress Themes" so the user understands the button is not for uploading WordPress themes but to browse themes.

I might be missing something, but the Add Themes screen does include a section for uploading a theme, see 55878.upload-theme.png, so "Add New" seems accurate. It is also consistent with all the other "Add New" links for various WordPress entities and data types across the admin, see comment:1:ticket:55875.

You are using an older version of WordPress or the button is too hard to find. Clicking on both "Add New" and "Add New Theme" buttons takes me to the Add Theme page. Add New is easy for a developer to understand but for an average user picking up WordPress for the first time, it is not descriptive. They don't know what it means. The biggest complaint about WordPress is it is hard to use.

I am just giving my suggestions on how to make it easier for a beginner. One way to do so is to use proper UX design practices and clearly define the action you want the user to take. If "Add New" blanketly is used in several parts of the UI each of these should be changed to better express the action the user should take. There should not be a blanket "Add New" term for everything in the UI.
