Hello,
I am writing to request a change to the languaging used for your time zone options for the USA. I currently am using this time zone for a Woo Bookings online scheduler on my website, Chronicillnesstraumastudies.com. Woo Commerce tells me this is item is part of the WordPress core and recommended submitting a ticket to report this as a bug since I see this as a very important modification to make as soon as possible.
It is my understanding that the time zone menu options that Woo Bookings and WordPress work with offer only the term “America” rather than the more commonly used option of US or USA or United States seen in other calendars across the web. Since I am in the mountain time zone in the USA this means that the calendar window my potential clients will see when scheduling shows my time zone as “America/Denver.”
I am a health professional with a specialty in trauma. The term “America” reflects negatively on my business.
It is an outdated view that “America” is the only America, ie: that it only represents the USA.
In actuality, the term represents each of the Americas and every country within them: ie: North America (for which the term "America" includes Canada), Central America, and South America.
The use of this term makes me, my site and my profession appear ignorant (or worse).
The term “America” relates to a perspective (conscious or unconscious) that we are the colonizing / dominant / settler culture. It should no longer be in use. Here is an article in Mother Jones that describes this topic in more depth.
I would like to request a change at the core wordpress programming for time zones for all users of a time zone for the USA to use US or USA, as short examples, rather than attempting to change this just on my single website. My web developer was unable to change it with his first attempts. I have selected "Text Changes" as the component but do not know if this is accurate.

If you have WooCommerce Bookings, you probably will want to edit the plugin's timezone settings.

As noted on ticket:50524#comment:2, WordPress itself does not maintain timezones. Other languages can have localized names for the places, though they still follow the grouping from PHP. The America(s) list includes 143 locations across North and South America (about 20% of them are within the U.S.).
