#6420 closed enhancement (wontfix)

shortcodes enhancement proposal

Description

Shortcodes currently support tags like [tag]. I think adding support for a more degradable <tag> would be cool.

Reason:
Say you code a plugin that uses the shortcode API and convert [foo] with something wicked. You add "[foo]" into all your posts. Cool.
Now, if you deactivate your plugin, all your posts show "[foo]" in plain. Not cool.

Using <foo> instead of [foo] is more degradable in a sense than if you deactivate your plugin, you just see nothing wrong, as <foo> is simply ignored by the browser.

I generally code my plugins to use HTML comments as shorttags, for that very reason.

Probably better to make it a comment, e.g. <!--foo-->, for the sake of validation. If a tag, at least make them self-closing, e.g. <foo />

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

The whole point to do it not as a HTML comment or HTML tag is that it's something that you can copy and paste anywhere, including the WYSIWYG, without it trying to be interpreted.
