Take this plugin for example: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/stats/

It only is available in .zip format (http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/stats.1.2.2.zip).

While .zip files are good and universal, I think adding an option to download in .tar.gz format would greatly help improve administration on *nix machines (BSD, Mac, Linux, etc.)

'unzip' is not always available, whereas 'tar -xvf *.tar.gz' is usually much more universal.

This would enable easier scripting for admins as well, especially the ones who use wget and PuTTY/BASH.

Gzip which is common nearly every *nix machine i've come accross handles Zip's fine.

I commonly use tar -zxf *.zip to extract zips.

I think most modern compiles of tar even automatically workout the compression format in use, which would result in your command working on zips too.
