Plugin Installer - No Remote URL field for Zip Upload

Description

In the new Plugin Installer, you can upload a zip file to install from, but you cannot enter a remote url to install the zip from. Seems like this would be hand-in-hand for the functionality desired from a Auto-Installer like this.

A bizzare idea.

Not sure its a good one either.

Anyway 2.7 is chock full of new features

I agree that it is a bizarre idea, but one that Gallery2 supports. I believe it is completely possible to do this for WordPress 2.8, in that instead of accessing wordpress.org, you are accessing another domain for the zip.

As long as the user has to initiate the request, then I don't see anything wrong with it. It will go a long way with cutting out having to first download and then upload, when you can just tell WordPress to download and then unzip and install for you.

Replying to jacobsantos:

You can take it if you want, But be warned that i'll be doing #7875 (consolidate plugin/theme/core upgrade/install functions) early in 2.8 hopefully, Which really only leaves the UI the same.. Might be better holding off until I've(or someone else has) had a chance to at least start implementing that?

+1 for this. One-click plugin updater did it, and it's obviously useful for plugins that aren't on extend (and for the plugins that are on extend that you can't find and have to use google for!).

fixed by #7875?

No. There still exists no remote-URL upload option, I'm tempted to leave it for Plugin material though, Since #7875 does all the heavy lifting of installing it.

personally, I filter option_update_plugin.

Err.. That makes no sense.

Instead of leaving it for a future release or closing as invalid, Wontfix would be better there.
