Description
On wp-admin/options-writing.php we see the Post via e-mail settings are all filled in with sample values, but there is no radio box to turn Post via e-mail on or off.
So it looks like Wordpress is listening all day to mail.example.com unless one blanks out the field or something.

Indeed right below it is a real Update Services box with a real http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ inside it.
We therefore conclude the only way to turn these things off is to erase them from the boxes, and Wordpress must really be querying mail.example.com all day by default!
