wp_link_pages('next_or_number=next') does not work in index.php

Setting the parameter next_or_number=next in the function wp_link_pages in the index.php of a theme does not work. There is no HTML output to create the link to the next page. However, it does work in archive.php and single.php. On the other hand, the parameter value of next_or_number=number does work on all pages.

Are you sure you put the code inside The Loop?
