Can you check your server's error logs to see what the error message is?

I suspect that your server is timing out or running out of memory.

As @johnbillion pointed out, probably a memory usage issue. It's very difficult trying to investigate on issues when there are not enough details and especially when the occurred error can't be reproduced. On the other hand, the WordPress Importer is going under a substantial refactoring process, see https://make.wordpress.org/core/2015/11/18/wordpress-importer-redux/ which should greatly reduce memory usage and bring in many improvements.
I'd say to close this ticket, please do feel free to reopen it if you can provide step by step instructions to reproduce the error and details about your hosting (e.g. memory limit, etc.), the xml file size and any other relevant information.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
