WordPress 4.6.1 editor causes loss of content

Description

Hi, since the upgrade to 4.6 (or perhaps it is 4.6.1) our editorial staff have been experiencing strange issues – sometimes they write posts in text mode, and the editing screen opens up the post split into two vertical windows (like trying to edit in two windows in MS Word) without them wanting this; each with its own save button and if they save the top half, the bottom of the post gets erased. Another strange thing that happens occasionally is that all the links in the post get pushed to its bottom.

What’s going on and what can we do? our editors already had to spend hours of work recreating content because of this.

Our site does have dozens of other plugins and we have a custom theme based on Designwall DW Focus. But those troubles started only after updating to 4.6. Before that we’ve been working for years with essentially the same setup and never had these problems. I'm sure they are not connected to plugins because I have not installe a new plugin in months. We only did a few updates to existing plugins in the last few weeks.

Oue editor has been updated to version 1.2.6.3 and we also have W3 Total cache 0.9.5.1. It has been reporting this error in the last month or so- see below - but the problem started way after this error message.

many thanks for any help.

W3 Total Cache error: It appears Page Cache URL rewriting is not working. Please verify that the server configuration allows .htaccess
Unfortunately disk enhanced page caching will not function without custom rewrite rules. Please ask your server administrator for assistance. Also refer to the install page for the rules for your server.

Many thanks...

Hi there,

The post editor looks perfectly fine with no plugins and a default theme on my end.

This does sounds like a plugin or theme conflict causing issues for you though, and I would urge you to follow the default troubleshooting steps of disabling any plugins (I know this isn't a simple step with W3Total Cache, but is a necessity) and also testing with a default theme such as Twenty Sixteen.

I'll leave this ticket as worksforme, as vanilla WordPress doesn't behave like this. For help with troubleshooting I'd recommend opening a topic on the Support Forums, and if you do discover a bug in core I welcome you to open the ticket back up at that time.
