Connection Timeout when importing heavy .xml (LiteSpeed)

Description
When importing big .xml files using the WordPress importer, the connection times out on LiteSpeed servers.
This is due to server not sending new content to the browser, so connection automatically closes. This is different to a PHP timeout due to low max_execution_time.
This might be prevented by showing some sort of progress bar so the connection is not closed due to inactivity.
