Hello! I am also unable to crop images as of today, using WordPress 5.5.1. The behavior looks the same as posted above. There seems to be 2 issues.
1) After attempting to do a crop, the Save button is greyed out and you are unable to click the button.
2) If you do some other alteration activity, like rotate, and then attempt to do a crop, the save button is then clickable, but after clicking it, the image does not actually get cropped. It remains the same as the original.
This would be such a useful feature in a post/image publishing flow. I hope this long running bug can be fixed!
If you need any further information, diagnostics, screenshots, etc, I'd be happy to provide.

- Focuses ui administration added
- Keywords needs-design-feedback added; dev-feedback removed
Hi there, welcome to WordPress Trac! Thanks for ticket.
Cropping does work for me in the latest Chrome, but I agree with comment:3 that the UI is not very intuitive:
- (Optionally) Click the Crop button to make the selection rectangle appear, or just start dragging from any place inside the image.
- After selecting an area, click the Crop button (not vice versa).
- Then the Save button becomes available.
It would probably be better if the Save button was available right after selecting an area, without clicking the Crop button again.
Marking this for design feedback.

Wow, it actually does work... Thanks for the instructions.
I definitely think the design / UX for this could be improved. Thank you!
I ran in to this issue as well. It happens in the latest versions of Chrome and FireFox. If you use the crop tool and then click the Crop button again or press the Enter key, then the crop is registered and the save button becomes available. This behavior is not very intuitive. It would be great to have the save option available while the crop tool is active. If focus switches to another image editing button like rotate or the save button is selected, then the crop state would be kept.
