Making a sentence or paragraph bold is intermittent

When I highlight a sentence and attempt to bold it, only part of the sentence gets bold. I then highlight and press bold again and might get the full sentence bold. Sometimes I have to go through this process a number of times to make the sentence bold. This slows me down and is a bug.

I was able to reproduce it.

Test Report

Env

  • WordPress 5.8 and 5.9-alpha-51558 (can't reproduce on 5.7)
  • Chrome 92.0.4515.159
  • Windows 10
  • Theme: Twenty Twenty One
  • Gutenberg Editor
  • Plugin: WP Downgrade

Steps to test

  1. Add at least two paragraphs of text
  2. Highlight the whole paragraph or the upper part
  3. Press ctrl+b
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the bold is applied to the not desired part

The Test Team was able to reproduce this problem on 5.8 but not 5.7. (See ​discussion during today's triage session) Moving it into the 5.8.2 milestone.

Hello @MikeLev,

Welcome to WordPress Core's Trac! Thank you for reporting this bug.

During today's test triage, multiple testers were able to reproduce the problem you reported. It appears to be intermittent. I updated the ticket's title.

The team was able to reproduce it on WordPress version 5.8 but not 5.7. I moved it into 5.8.2 for investigation.

Steps to Test

Select the contents very close to the block, click on bold or italics.

Result:

Only part of the content gets becomes bold.

Since there's no working patch yet and 5.8.2 RC is due out soon, I'm going to punt this to a future release.
