#55053 closed defect (bug) (reported-upstream)

Large theme and plugin metaboxes are overlaid over the backend block editor when switching preview modes

Description

There is a bug with WP 5.9 and some plugins and themes that use meta boxes at the bottom.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. On a clean install with any default WP theme, install Yost SEO with any default WP theme.
  2. Go to a page edit mode and switch preview modes. Come back to the Desktop view. The Yoast metabox is over the page content! The issue is fixed when the admin edit page is refreshed.

That also happens with other themes and plugins that use large metaboxes at the bottom thus making the whole editing experience very uncomfortable since with every responsive preview switch you would have to update and refresh the page!

Hello and thank you for opening this ticket,

I can reproduce the issue using Yoast SEO, but I can't reproduce it using other plugins like Advanced Custom Fields. Let's investigate.
Moving for 5.9.1 consideration.

Ok it was already reported on Gutenberg repository: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/38062

But let's keep this ticket open to make sure it's addressed if needed for 5.9.1.

Hey, thanks.

If you make the content large enough, you will see it happening with ACF, too!

I reproduced the issue in a new local install with no plugins and the Twenty Twenty-One (2021) theme. The behavior does not happen in WP 5.8.2, so it's a regression. It also happens with the new Twenty Twenty-Two theme.

@quantum_leap I tried to reproduce the issue however I can't. The setup was WP v5.9.1 themes that I used: Twenty Twenty-Two, Twenty Twenty & Twenty Twenty-One.

Thanks

@rafiahmedd Here is what's happening with WP 5.9.1 and Twenty Twenty-two. Displays fine after a refresh.

The issue was introduced in version 5.9, not 5.9.1 :)

Thanks for the additional testing by the way :)
