Static homepage display settings: the posts page is not being assigned to the Blog Home template or Index template

Description

When I use 6.5 Beta Tester plugin and change to static homepage display, Home and Blog, the blog page is assigned to the Pages template, not the Blog Home or Index template.

I don't have any other plugins installed, only Beta Tester. I am using Local and tried both the Twenty Twenty-Two and Twenty Twenty-Four themes.

The expected output when changing to static homepage display is that the posts page will be assigned to the Blog Home template or Index template.

Hi

I am able to confirm this. The page that is assigned to the be posts page in the reading settings uses the "blog home" template in 6.4.3 but the "pages" template in 6.5 RC.

But the "blog home" content is shown on the front when I navigate to the posts page.

When I am viewing the posts page on the front, and click "Edit Site" it takes me to the Blog Home template.
When I am viewing the posts page in the block editor, and click on "Edit template" it takes me to single page template.

  • Milestone changed from Awaiting Review to 6.5

Moving this to 6.5 for visibility, but more realistically it will need to be fixed in a minor release?

  • Component changed from General to Themes
  • Keywords needs-patch added
  • Milestone changed from 6.5 to 6.5.1

Given the current stage of the release cycle this is definitely something for 6.5.1, not 6.5.

  • Milestone 6.5.3 deleted
  • Resolution set to reported-upstream
  • Status changed from new to closed

I'm closing this as reported-upstream since there is a PR in Gutenberg that is slated to be backported for 6.5.3.
