Description
Hi. Me and a (ton) lot of other folk could use some help. I know that multisite is only a tiny minority of folks, but the plugin called Network Shared Media used to work. When 4.1 came out, Network Shared Media stopped working for Featured Image (and Woo Product Images).
Now, I'm not the coding Genius here, but I have been slowly trying to follow these updates for about 7 years now. Somewhere in 4.1 something happened.
I used to be able to use the Network Shared Media to put Featured Images into a Post or Page, and ~get this~ I could also use it for Woo Products as well. Rock on, right?
So far, I've pecked away at it, and I know I can't figure out how to make it work. So I've hired folks - lots of folks. I've even stumped the no. 3 TOP coder over at codeable.io with this issue. I've even thrown more money into the pot and no one can figure it out.
Can someone please consider sharing "why" or "what" changed in 4.1? I have a guy with 30 stores (each a separate WP installation) who sells the same products at different prices. So, you see the text is the only thing that changes. But, as of 4.1, instead of using the same image, I have had to duplicate each and every image for 30 different sites.
I know I'm not the only one having this concern. Over in the Advanced WordPress Group this comes up (surprisingly) more times that I thought it would.
Is there any chance that we can, please!, revert back whatever code made Network Shared Media break? And / or, can someone please share with me the actual change that makes Network Shared Media not work with anything past 4.1?
Thank You So Much! -Brad

I'm not sure what change specifically would have broken it, but this sounds like a plugin issue, as shared media is not a feature included in core out of the box and featured images otherwise work properly. I'd go back to the plugin developer to let him know it isn't working. If he determines that there is something broken in core that is preventing this from working, then we can revisit.
Now, this does pose the question as to whether network-shared media should be something supported directly in core, but we can have that discussion during one of the weekly multisite chats in Slack.

Ok, here's a quick explanation in video:

Someone mentioned to me that I should emphasize the 'why' behind the 'what'. So... I've attempted to do that. It's not really about the Network Shared Media Plugin as it is about "how" and "where-do-we-look" to fix the issue w/ Network Shared Media no longer working.

Us multisite folk can pay all we want for more and more storage, but unless / until we figure out a solution to the Network Shared Media for all of our images, the "media-storage-problem" will continue with an indefinite solution.
That's why we need help. We need to figure out "What in core made it stop working" from 4.01 to 4.1.
Once we figure out "where / what" change was made, then we can start looking in the right place for a solution.
Thank you @Sergey! I know my coding is still a work in progress. The most I've ever done is tackle a few tickets (with someone else's help) at WordCamp DFW.
So I really, Really do appreciate you helping me fix the ticket!
